So I am doing an Olin Self Study this semester which involves picking a technical topic, learning about it and producing a final report. For my OSS I have decided to focus on machine vision and do it in the context of my SCOPE project.

I have decided that it would be a good idea to keep a log of what I do as I go. To facilitate that I will be posting entries here with the oss tag to identify them. I have also started tagging links of usefulness on del.icio.us. Feel free to follow along and use them as you will.

The first useful resource that I found was this one lone hacker’s website on machine vision. The guy had a bunch of cool examples with detailed writeups which I think will prove useful.

On his site I came across the idea of applying machine vision to GUIs. Then I thought back to a conversation I had with Allen Downey a couple of years back about research. When I was talking to Allen he suggested that I create a program that could record usage patterns of people on their laptops over time. I think it might be kind of cool to have a program that watches over your shoulder and does something with that information.
