The fourth of July always brings division to my mind. I have nationalistic pride. I believe that America’s ability to innovate and remix has had a profound effect on the world. I celebrate it.
I hate that we are the most wealthy and wasteful nation on Earth. I hate the fact that we act unilaterally (last time I checked we didn’t even have a majority of the 6 billion people who inhabit this earth). I hate the fact that we as a nation do not know how to humble.
But what I hate most on the fourth of July is all the speeches which refer to America’s freedom and America’s openness. Shame on those who invoke the names of the founders of this nation when these are the headlines which permeate our press.

As many people say but few believe, freedom has a great price. Unfortunately today it looks like too few Americans are willing to pay that price. Welcome to the police state.
